We all want our dogs to live long, healthy lives — and more pet parents are turning to fresh, human-grade food like ours to do so.
But does it really make a difference? A new year-long study of senior sled dogs says it does — and in a big way.
Researchers at Cornell followed 22 older Alaskan sled dogs, splitting them into two groups. One ate dry kibble, the other ate fresh, human-grade food. Over the course of 12 months, scientists tracked changes in the dogs’ blood chemistry — a snapshot of what was happening inside their bodies.
The results were striking: Dogs eating fresh food showed signs of a healthier metabolism, better utilization of fats and proteins for energy, and fewer harmful compounds associated with aging. In fact, their blood showed increases in beneficial nutrients, such as creatine and omega-3 fatty acids, while also showing a decrease in markers of inflammation and cellular damage.
In short, this was the first long-term scientific evidence that diet— specifically fresh, lightly processed food — can dramatically and positively affect a dog’s metabolism and overall health.
